Fresh from our successes with Herald of the Titans and Wrath of the Lich King content, Blackfathom Deep Dish continued onward toward Cataclysm raid content. Widely heralded as the worst expansion World of WarCraft has had to date (aside from maybe the current one, Warlords of Draenor), we spent as little time here as we could.
Over the past 5 months with the guild, I've been raid leader for every single raid. Unfortunately, I had something come up and was required to miss our raid on August 13th. And, of course, our guild managed to finish not only the Bastion of Twilight, but Blackrock Descent as well. Without me. The nerve!
From what everyone said, they were tuned very poorly. Granted, most of us had purchased gear from the tier gear vendors, so everyone out-geared this content from the get-go. Still, it was fairly disappointing to hear they could basically walk through the fights and ignore the mechanics. Sounds like the same problem Karazhan suffered from when we raided through Burning Crusade content.
After that, we tackled Throne of the Four Winds and most of Firelands on the next raid night. These, too, were tuned pretty badly and wound up being incredibly easy. We almost one-shot everything and weren't punished very hard for missing fight mechanics (outside of Lord Rhyolith and Shannox). The rest of Firelands fell the next raid night and we finished Baradin Hold (and started Dragon Soul) the night after that. These were also tuned poorly) and gave us absolutely no problem. We even one-shot the Spine of Deathwing fight the next night, to my surprise (and relief). Our single attempt was incredibly messy, though...
The only fight that gave us any problems at all, actually, was Deathwing himself. We finally defeated him after 8-10 attempts, most of which were us simply trying to figure out which order was best. We had issues with killing the Elementium Bolts and Blistering Tentacles, so our eventual platform order was Ysera, Kalecgos, Nozdormu, Alexstrazsa. This way, we could keep Nozdormu's time-slowing areas up longer (to help with the Elementium Bolts) and Alexstrazsa's Cauterize for the entire first phase (to nullify the Blistering Tentacles entirely).
And...that's it! Having gone back through Cataclysm now, it's no wonder I un-subscribed. This content was rather un-inspired. Many of the fights featured incredibly frustrating mechanics (or were simply frustrating in-and-of themselves, like Spine). Combined with the absolutely ridiculous storyline (the entire Dragon Soul ending was a complete cringe-fest), this is still the all-time low in WarCraft's raiding history.
Although I was disappointed in how poorly this content was tuned, I have to say I'm a little relieved we're through it already. Definitely looking forward to Mists of Pandaria, though!
